The word retarded, though originally a medical diagnosis is now commonly and casually used as an insult or even to express happiness or excitement. However, this word can be extremely hurtful to people with disabilities/special needs as well as to their loved ones.
You may think that the person you’re speaking to understands that you intend no harm or offense, but you never know who is within earshot or if the person you’re speaking to has a relative, friend or loved one with a disability/special needs. The use of this word in any way only serves to perpetuate the misuse of a painful and outdated term, when there are many other words that you could chose to still make your point.
So while we realize that most people don't intend to be insensitive or hurtful, it's our hope that by bringing this to your attention you’ll be encouraged to choose a different word when you’re referring to:
-something you don't understand
Now that you know, what will you do? #NTYKWWYD
Still think it's just a word?
